Here’s another great Stooges short. Dealing with War time and fun.

This episode I really love especially. Mostly because the final scene is a laugh riot. It’s chaotic, it’s ridiculous, it’s in fast motion. I love when they fight in fast motion and their voices get high.

Also I love when another character in the show (not a stooge) gets hysterically mad and chases them. It’s great, the stooges always pull a Donald Duck and annoy the shit out of people. Even going as far as hurting them.

I had this hanging up in my hallway growing up. I made my mom frame it and treated it like it was a work of art. Curly Howard was my idol as a boy. I shaved my head in 6th grade and would bark at people to show my love for the Curl.

Everyone will say, “yeah I’m more of a Marx Brothers fan” Pretty much cause they don’t want to come off like a 3 year old admitting they enjoy the Three Stooges. Well nuts to that. I mean sure I love Marx Brothers too. But it’s a different entity. It’s witty and fun and Chico and Harpo are the best. However, if I had to pick between the two, I’d say the Stooges every time. Mainly because I just can’t get enough of their wacky antics and they fill me with such comedy joy that no other comedians can quite reach. Their apathy, their moranity, their sheer bad luck. It’s the best. The timing these guys have is phenomenal. And anytime someone is whacked on the head or bumped or slips and falls. It’s hilarious every fuckin’ time. Without a doubt. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched these over and over again and still wanted more.

I picked an episode that just came out on dvd that I watched and it’s got some of my favorite bits. Some of Moe’s best tantrums and thunderstrikes. As well as some great Larry bits. The fact that they start off selling fish that they caught themselves thinking they’ll make a profit is one of the best stooge openings ever. Stay with me on this blog, I’ll post another stooge fave tomorrow.

The Wire, greatest cop show EVER!!!!!

I know what you’re thinking. Cop show? Really? But I have my law and order, my CSI, my CSI Crimes Division, my CSI Miami Style, my CSI: Bullshit squad.

Chuck all that garbage in the garbage, because it’s total garbage. Even Cold Cases. GARBAGE. If you want a real gritty depiction of life on the streets and how being a cop with morals isn’t what it used to be then you HAVE GOT to check this fascinating HBO series out. Watch all of them. It’s worth it. Like Deadwood, The Wire has it’s own distinct and unique voice. It’s passionate, unflinching and raw. Gets into your head when you walk away to get some dinner or go out and see friends. I got so hooked on this show I cared more about hanging out on those corners with Omar, Avon, Stringer Bell and Bunk than seeing friends. Sick? Pathetic? Nah, good tv, yo!

The characterization is so crisp. The dialogue sharp and to the point. Not a moment wasted in this show setting up to explain a murder and trying to dissolve your suspicion at every turn. Nope. Just pure, straight powerful drama to your dome. So vigorous and yet so poetic. It’s a street fairy tale but one littered with darkness and corruption.

Moving, awesome and so so good. I spent practically my whole vacation in front of my brother’s computer in Modesto. Glued to seasons 4 and 5 which are the last.

Be warned, once you step into this glorious show rich in story and character it’s going to be really hard to go back to your precious Law and cold cases. They may depict horrifying scenes of violence and even hint at some graphic language and situations. But the overwhelming feeling of being on the streets of Baltimore, drug trafficking?

Nothing beats The Wire. NOTHING!!!

Sports Night, okay to watch if you're not a sports fan

Back in 98’ my dad owned a small grocery store. A mini mart if you will. I didn’t want to put it that way and I’m Palestinean, not Pakistanian. And it was a fun job. I would sit behind the counter helping customers with a cable tv right there by my side. To kill the droll loneliness of the capitalist world around me.

Seinfeld, Drew Carey, sometimes Dawson’s Creek when nothing else was on. And two little gems that didn’t last long sadly. Freaks and Geeks and Sports Night. Also Upright Citizen’s Brigade but that’s another story.

Sports Night. Aaron Sorkin, writer of A Few Good Men’s first foray into television. And what a foray it was. It really evolved the style of a tv show, quite easily and wonderfully. A show about the people who work on a show like ESPN’s SportsCenter. Coupled with the fact that these people have to put on a sports show every night. They also have to live normal lives and the two constantly reject each other. Most of them give up a normal life because they love the show, the atmosphere, the people around them and sports.

I know what you’re thinking I’d be thinking the same thing if someone were telling me about this show. I don’t like sports. I used to. Quite a bit. But for some reason grew weary of it. And this show isn’t really about sports. It’s genius. The character interaction, the pressure to make a good sports show, the sports scandals, relationships, misunderstandings, heartwarming and lighthearted comedic highs and lows and the pacing. Each episode there’s never a dull moment as the camera moves at the speed of each character flailing their arms to cut in a graphics package or rush a sports clip in to get into the show, or the 30 seconds till air when everyone gets to catch a breath.

This is remarkable writing and television that I could appreciate back in 98’ but it wasn’t until I started rewatching them recently that I caught all the nuances. And see why Sorkin is the brilliant creator he is.

It’s basically Larry Sanders Show but instead of a late night talk show, it’s a sports show.
